Self-Measurement
Since I got into the world of menswear, I have a Google Sheet with the measurements of me I took myself.
From my body (chest, neck, sleeve, waist) to the measurements of fitted shirts, tailored jackets and pants I hemmed myself.
The neck is the trickiest, it's like my neck size is not consistant and buttoning the top buttons always chokes me. That was why I even bought collar extenders, a very unelegant but necessary piece for people like me.
In-Store
I decided to buy shirts from Brooks Brothers, so I went to the store to try them on myself and got measured by the staff. I wish shirt makers make OTR shirts' neck size in .25 inch increments! At the end of the day, I have to choose a neck size / sleeve length combination where shoulders and sleeves fit, choking is less important, he said, and I agree.
Turned out that the neck size I took was too large. I the neck size thing is not consistant across brands.
