Persia AKA Iran is a regional superpower by the Caspian Sea. ~90 million people, and expected to go over 100 million by 2050. It connects Turkey to the NW and neighbors quite a lot of countries known for oil reserve and production (itself included).

Nowruz (Persian New Year)

Nowruz is the new year, and it's even later (March) than the lunar one (Feb in Gregorian).
I went to the Nowruz event at NCSU where people shook hands while saying salam and happy new year. I had to leave very early and missed the food because of a class :(.
